It’s official - Gray restaurant is one of the best steakhouses and best bistros in Johannesburg
In the ‘Best of…’ pages of Eat Out magazine 2012 (www.eatout.co.za), a new section highlighting favourite restaurants of Eat Out reviewers in each city, Gray restaurant was named one of the best steakhouses and best bistros in Johannesburg. This isn’t bad for a restaurant that has only been open for six months and great news for Johannesburg diners.
Gray restaurant, located an easy 10 minute drive from OR Tambo International airport in Boksburg, is the new restaurant of Chef Philippe Wagenfuhrer, formerly of Roots restaurant. Wagenfuhrer is no stranger to Eat Out reviewers, who voted Roots among South Africa’s top ten restaurants from 2006 to 2010.
This time reviewers praised several elements crucial to Gray: Its service, that is polished, personal and informed and a diverse, frequently changing but simple menu. Gray also impressed reviewers by maintaining a philosophy of sourcing its ingredients, as far as possible, from small artisanal producers and bread is baked freshly on the premises, each day. Being a steakhouse, the trump card of the eatery is obtained from free range, grass-fed herds, something that shows in the tenderness and flavor of the meat. This is translated into dishes like orange-glazed eisbein with soy velouté, or a simply grilled free-range steak with mustard seed sauce, each designed to combine expertly with one of Wagenfuhrer’s specially crafted wines (he has a hand in the wine making himself) or ice-cold beers. Supplied by microbrewery Dog&Fig, Gray is the only restaurant in Johannesburg where you’ll find them, and it just proves that eating out in this city is getting more and more exciting. We encourage you to experience it too.
Things get even better on Friday nights when Cameroonian musician, Della Tumin, creates a slick but soothing atmosphere at Gray, with his unique afrojazz sounds. Gray restaurant might be a bit of a drive for some, but all things considered, it’s worth it.
